At 10:02 on the morning of 12 February 1988, a Soviet frigate did something navies almost never do on purpose: it steered its steel hull directly into another warship. The target was the American destroyer USS Caron, cruising a little more than ten nautical miles off the southern coast of Crimea. Minutes later a second Soviet frigate shouldered into the cruiser USS Yorktown. Overhead, Soviet Tu-16 bombers watched the whole thing. No shots were fired, no one was killed, yet for a few tense minutes the Cold War was being fought not with missiles but with paint, plating, and the sheer momentum of ships pressed against ships.
