At Scar House in Yorkshire, the foundations of farmhouses flooded decades earlier emerged in the cracked mud. In gardens from Kilkenny to Kent, hosepipes lay coiled and forbidden. The lawns were the color of straw. Children played in the kind of weather that British and Irish people read about in the South of France but rarely lived through at home. For four months that summer, an unmoving block of high pressure sat over the British Isles, and the warmest August in the entire instrumental record - dating back to the seventeenth century - settled in to break records nobody had quite imagined breaking.]]></description>
