One room on the ground floor, a sleeping loft above, walls made of timber notched together in the half-dovetail joint that Appalachian builders favored for its strength and tightness against winter wind. On December 15, 1891, in this single room, Mollie Bays Carter gave birth to her first son and named him Alvin Pleasant Delaney. He would grow up to be A.P. Carter, the man who walked the back roads of Poor Valley with a notebook and collected the songs that became the foundation of American country music. The cabin is older than he was - built in the 1880s by his parents, Robert and Mollie - and it has outlasted him by more than six decades.]]></description>
