An atmospheric river pushed the Nooksack and the Fraser past their banks, water spread across the flat farmland of the Sumas Prairie, and before it stopped the old outline of Sumas Lake had become legible again from the air: Highway 1 under water, 1,100 homes evacuated, the city calling the situation catastrophic. In December 2025 another atmospheric river did it again, and the Sumas flats emptied of people a second time. Abbotsford is a city of 153,524 on the Canada–United States border, the most populous municipality in British Columbia outside metropolitan Vancouver and the largest of any by area. It is also a city partly built where a lake used to be, and the lake has never entirely agreed to the arrangement.
