The Aquila ran into the rocks off Aberystwyth on 19 February 1861, on passage from Llanelli to Aberdovey, and the wreck triggered the campaign that, the following year, brought the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to the town. There had already been a local lifeboat at Aberystwyth since 1843 — bought by public subscription, manned by volunteers, working without the resources of a national service — but the Aquila convinced the RNLI to take over. In 1862 a new 32-foot, ten-oared, self-righting pulling-and-sailing boat called Evelyn Wood arrived in the town, and Aberystwyth became part of a chain of RNLI stations running the length of Cardigan Bay from Strumble Head in the south to the Llŷn Peninsula in the north.]]></description>
