Where you expect a solid white tower, there is instead a delicate, curving cage of steel latticework, so open that the sky shows through it, tapering upward in a shape that seems to have been drawn by a geometer rather than a mason. Rising from a concrete pier on a tiny islet in the Dnieper-Bug Estuary, the Adziogol Lighthouse is one of the most improbable structures on the whole Black Sea coast. At 211 feet it is the tallest lighthouse in Ukraine and the sixteenth-tallest traditional lighthouse in the world, and its unlikely elegance is the signature of one of history's most inventive engineers.
