At 3:37 on the afternoon of 2 September 1970, a controller heard the airliner call out three numbers, 'Forty Five, Zero, Twelve,' the final digit rising into panic. Six minutes earlier the crew had sounded entirely calm, reporting their speed and the town they expected to pass next. Nothing in between explained what happened. Somewhere in the clear sky over the Ukrainian steppe near Dnipro, a Tupolev Tu-124 carrying thirty-seven people rolled onto its side, pitched steeply toward the ground, and struck the earth at a seventy-degree angle. All aboard were killed, and more than half a century later, no one can say for certain why.]]></description>
