They had been lying in the peat of a shallow valley northeast of Hamburg for roughly twelve thousand years, complete skeletons, sunk in a former lake by hunters who killed them at the end of the last Ice Age - and in the same deposits lay the arrows themselves, shafts of pine, preserved by waterlogged ground that keeps out oxygen. That is why archaeologists worldwide say the word "Ahrensburgian." A commuter town of roughly 34,500 people, twenty minutes by train from Hamburg's central station, gave its name to the culture that produced the earliest clear evidence of the bow and arrow in Europe.
