      <description><![CDATA[Long before refrigeration reached the Costa Blanca, this mountain kept the coast in ice. Each winter, workers packed snow into stone-lined pits high on Aitana's flanks, sealed them, and through the baking months that followed hauled the frozen blocks down to the towns below. The pits are ruins now, but they explain something about the mountain that its bare summit does not: at 1,558 metres, Aitana is the highest point in the whole province of Alicante, high enough and cold enough to store winter itself.]]></description>
      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Long before refrigeration reached the Costa Blanca, this mountain kept the coast in ice. Each winter, workers packed snow into stone-lined pits high on Aitana's flanks, sealed them, and through the baking months that followed hauled the frozen blocks down to the towns below. The pits are ruins now, but they explain something about the mountain that its bare summit does not: at 1,558 metres, Aitana is the highest point in the whole province of Alicante, high enough and cold enough to store winter itself.</p>
