Its first name was Payne Institute. Its first students were freedmen and their children, people who in many cases had been forbidden by state law to learn to read only a decade earlier. The ministers, led by John M. Brown, knew what they were doing. They knew that emancipation without education would not be freedom. They were building a foundation, and they intended it to outlast them.
