White sand, turquoise water, palm trees leaning toward a shoreline that invites you in - and yet the Atlantic is more than 700 kilometers away. Alter do Chao lies on the right bank of the Tapajos River, a major tributary of the Amazon, far enough inland that the nearest salt water is a two-day boat journey downriver. When the dry season arrives and the water level drops, the river exposes beaches that The Guardian once ranked as the most beautiful freshwater beaches in the world. Locals call their village the Brazilian Caribbean. The comparison sounds like tourism copy until you see it, at which point the argument shifts.
