Ouadane and Chinguetti in the Adrar, Tichitt in the Tagant, Oualata far to the east in the Hodh - they sit hundreds of kilometers apart, scattered across some of the most forbidding terrain on the planet. Yet they belong together. In 1996 UNESCO inscribed all four as a single World Heritage Site, ksour number 750, because together they tell one story: how a civilization grew up around the slow passage of camels, and what is left of it now that the camels are gone.
