Angeln: Introduction

Not after a king, a saint or a river, but after a small hooked peninsula of moraine hills and glacial lakes wedged between a Baltic fjord and a long tidal inlet, in what is now the northernmost corner of Germany. The Angles who left here in the fifth and sixth centuries carried their homeland's name to Britain and eventually gave it to a whole country and a whole language. The homeland kept the name too, and then kept almost nothing else. Angeln today is dairy farms, beech woods, red-brick villages and lakes — about as far from a founding myth as a landscape can look.
