Anno Domini (gallery)

Art galleries in San Jose, California

Before street art hung in museums and tattoo artists exhibited at biennials, Anno Domini gallery in San Jose was already showing the work. Located in the South of First Area, or SoFA, the gallery has been a champion of emerging and international artists working in genres that the traditional art world long dismissed: street art, zine culture, tattoo art, and the scrappy visual languages of DIY creativity. Gallery A.D., as it is also known, helped define SoFA as San Jose's cultural district and proved that a gallery could thrive by betting on artists the establishment had not yet noticed.

SoFA's Creative Anchor

The South of First Area in downtown San Jose was not always a cultural district. When Anno Domini opened, SoFA was still transitioning from a cluster of bars and red-light businesses into something more purposeful. The gallery's presence helped anchor the strip's creative identity, drawing artists and audiences who might otherwise have looked to San Francisco for contemporary art. The gallery's exhibition program favors work that comes from the street, the studio, and the underground, giving visibility to artists whose practices exist outside the conventional gallery system.

Art from the Margins

Anno Domini's focus on street art and zine culture reflects a conviction that the most vital creative work often happens at the margins of institutional art. The gallery has exhibited artists whose work blurs the boundaries between fine art, graphic design, illustration, and graffiti, creating shows that feel more like interventions than exhibitions. This curatorial approach has attracted a diverse audience that includes both traditional art collectors and younger visitors drawn to the energy and accessibility of the work on display.
