Arapiraca: Introduction

Photo credit Brunonunes.oliiveira, CC BY-SA 4.0. The crop was called ouro verde — green gold — and through the 1970s tobacco was the reason anyone outside Alagoas had heard of Arapiraca. Then everyone planted it. The small processing sheds scattered around the region could not absorb what the fields were producing, prices fell under the weight of the harvest, and the boom that had built the city stopped building it. Most towns in the Brazilian interior do not survive losing their one crop. Arapiraca is now the second most populous municipality in the state, which makes what happened next the more interesting half of the story.
