Araripe Geopark: Introduction

Photo credit AUGUSTO PESSOA, CC BY-SA 3.0. There is a bird on this plateau that breeds in one square kilometre of the planet and nowhere else. The male Araripe manakin is white, with a scarlet stripe running from a tuft above the bill back over the crown and down between the shoulders; the female is olive green and much harder to see. Nobody outside the region knew the species existed until 1996. It was formally described two years later, and it is now listed as critically endangered, with somewhere between 150 and 700 mature individuals left. The bird has become the emblem of the Araripe Geopark, and the reason is not sentimental. Almost everything that makes this corner of Ceará extraordinary - the water, the forest, the fossils - comes out of the same rock.
