Photo credit Dguendel, CC BY 3.0. On 11 May 1667, sixty-four heads of household and one woman assembled on an uninhabited island in the Schlei to swear an oath to a duke. They were skippers and shipowners from Kappeln, a village a few kilometres upstream, and they were leaving because their local lord, Detlef von Rumohr, had decided to press them into serfdom. Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf offered them the island, twenty written privileges, and a way out. The place they built there is still standing. With 258 residents and 0.45 square kilometres of ground, Arnis remains the smallest town in Germany by both measures — a whole municipality you can walk end to end in ten minutes.
