Arraial d'Ajuda: Introduction

Rua Manoel Crescêncio Santiago runs straight and oddly wide for a beach village, and it does so because it used to be a crosswind runway. Arraial d'Ajuda had one of Brazil's early airfields, a campo de aviação dedicated in 1939, and when the new commercial airport opened across the river at Porto Seguro in 1982, the strip shut and the village grew over it. The main runway is Parque Central now, a green rectangle in the middle of town whose shape makes complete sense the moment you know. The street takes its name from one of the guards the old Department of Civil Aviation posted here. Nothing on the ground says any of this. You have to be told, and then you cannot unsee it.
