The Wooly Worm Festival is not a joke - the winner's color bands are read like a forecast, dark for harsh cold, light for mild, and locals claim the prediction holds. This is Avery County, North Carolina, the youngest county in the state and one of the highest, a place where folk knowledge and high-altitude weirdness still drive the calendar.
