Three childless years later, custom obliged him to return her to her family - a quiet domestic catastrophe of the sort that usually leaves no trace in any archive. Cao Văn Lầu turned it into a song. "Dạ cổ hoài lang" - hearing the night drum, longing for the absent husband - took shape around 1919, and he wrote it not in his own voice but in hers. The melody spread through the delta faster than anyone expected. By the late 1920s the cải lương opera troupes had built entire productions around it, and its skeleton hardened into vọng cổ: the mode that still anchors sung theatre across southern Vietnam. A flat coastal province of rice paddies and shrimp ponds had produced the region's national aria.]]></description>
