Some time in the early sixth century, a Celtic missionary named Deiniol built a monastic cell on a low hill above the Menai Strait, and surrounded it with a wattled fence. The Welsh word for that kind of enclosure was bangor. The fence is long gone. The monastic settlement grew into a Christian community, and then into a town, and then into a city - one of the smallest in the United Kingdom, with around 15,000 residents and an outsized presence in Welsh history. The bishopric of Bangor is one of the oldest in the UK. The cathedral still stands where Deiniol's fence once did.]]></description>
