The mountain is named for a sound. When the wind funnels through the canyons of the Serra do Roncador, it produces a low roar that gave the range its name — roncador, the snorer. Barra do Garças sits at its foot, on the Mato Grosso side of the state line, at the point where the Garças river empties into the Araguaia. Nearly seventy thousand people live here. There is a Christ the Redeemer statue on a hill above town, which is why locals call the place the Rio de Janeiro of the West, and there is a concrete pad on the outskirts built to receive spacecraft, which is why a rather different set of visitors comes.
