Photo credit INPE, Public domain. Fishermen named it long before anyone thought of rockets. At sunrise the light comes in low off the Atlantic and strikes the cliffs south of Natal at an angle that turns the exposed rock the colour of fire, and the stretch of coast got called the Barreira do Inferno — the Barrier of Hell. In 1965 Brazil built its first rocket launch range behind those cliffs. It could have chosen something more dignified. It kept the fishermen's name.
