Nobody can agree on what Batatais means, and the competing answers are far more interesting than a settled one would be. The tidy explanation is agricultural: bandeirantes pushing inland found fields of purple sweet potatoes, batatas, and the name stuck. But local scholars have never been satisfied with potatoes. One theory traces the word to baitatá in the indigenous language once spoken here — a river running over rock, which would describe the waterfalls nearby. Another reaches for mboitatá, the fire-snake, guardian of the fields against burning, and points to the small pockets of gas around the city that can throw up flames on a hot night. A fourth theory belongs to prospectors: batatal was old miners' slang for ground where gold lay close enough to the surface to pick up. This was a stopping place on the road to the Goiás mines, so the men who invented that word certainly passed through.
