For hours they had hammered the Algerian flagship from a careful distance, aiming to break her masts and rigging while sparing her hull, because they wanted to take her whole. When she finally struck her colours and her survivors were lifted off, the Spaniards found fifty-three chained captives below, men who had no idea that rescue had been coming all night.]]></description>
