At ten in the morning on 18 April 1864, the Prussian guns stopped. After a siege that had begun on 2 April, the silence was not mercy; it was the signal, and every Danish soldier still in the forward redoubts on the Dybbøl hills understood what it meant. Prussian infantry came up out of their saps and across the churned ground. Thirteen minutes later the first line of the Danish defence had fallen. Denmark would lose the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, and spend the next century and a half arguing about what that morning meant.
