The Danish war cry that morning was a threat aimed squarely at the men behind the barricade: Wahr di, Buer, de Gaar de kummt - beware, farmer, the Guard is coming. It was not an idle boast. The Guard in question was four thousand professional Landsknechts in eight companies, pikes three to five metres long, the most feared infantry available for hire in northern Europe. By the end of the afternoon of 17 February 1500, on a flooded causeway south of Hemmingstedt, the farmers of Dithmarschen had turned the phrase inside out and were shouting it back: Wahr di, Garr, de Buer de kumt. Beware, Guard - the farmer is coming.
