On the ridges east of Sevastopol on the morning of 5 November 1854, a thick autumn mist settled over the heights so completely that a soldier could not see the man fifty paces away - and into that grey nothing the Imperial Russian Army sent forty thousand men. What followed became known as the Soldier's Battle, not for glory but for necessity: the generals, blind in the murk, lost all control, and the day was decided by scattered companies fighting on their own initiative, often at bayonet point, against an enemy who materialized without warning from the white.
