It was August 26, 1861, the war was about four months old, and the Ohioans were camped at a four-way intersection of farm roads in Nicholas County called Kessler's Cross Lanes. They were green troops, recently mustered, unfamiliar with the mountains they had been sent to defend, and they had no idea that Confederate Brigadier General John B. Floyd had crossed the Gauley River the night before with the express purpose of attacking them at first light. When the firing started, Colonel Erastus Tyler's regiment scattered in two directions at once. Half of them, including Major Jack Casement, would spend the next several days hiking 80 miles through enemy country, ridge after ridge, to safety in Charleston - without losing a single man.]]></description>
