Photo credit Public domain. The chronicle says it happened in the dark, during a thunderstorm. Lightning lit the field north of Chernihiv while two armies collided in the mud, and by the flashes men killed men they could barely see. This was Listven, in the year 1024, and the two commanders were brothers - sons of Vladimir the Great, fighting over what their father had left behind. When the storm cleared, one brother stood over a broken army; the other had fled into the night. And in one of history's stranger twists, the brother who lost would be remembered as Yaroslav the Wise.
