The rest of him was somewhere on the field. Penda of Mercia, the pagan king who had won the day, was now the most powerful ruler in the Anglo-Saxon midlands. Bede later wrote that Oswald of Northumbria prayed for the souls of his soldiers as he saw he was about to die. Within a generation, those soldiers' bones were being sold across Europe as relics of a saint and martyr - and the place where Oswald fell would be called, in English, Oswald's Tree.
