The Swedish gunners saw the horsemen coming across the causeway and did something soldiers almost never do: they tipped their own cannon into the lake. They had a good position — the marshy ground west of Nauen could only be crossed on one narrow bank, and they had thrown up fieldworks and sited guns to cover it. They abandoned all of it without firing. Behind them, a thousand-odd Brandenburg troopers had ridden through the night at a gallop to get there. It was 17 June 1675, the day before the Battle of Fehrbellin, and what happened around this small Havelland market town is the part of the story that usually gets one sentence.]]></description>
