He had brought between 300 and 500 fighters to attack a Virginia militia force of about 1,000 men camped at the point where the Kanawha River joins the Ohio. He had every reason to fight. The Shawnee had not been consulted when the Iroquois signed the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix that ceded Shawnee hunting grounds south of the Ohio. They had few allies left, and the Virginia militia was the first wedge of a colonial advance that would not stop on its own. The battle on October 10, 1774 lasted hours and broke into hand-to-hand fighting. Cornstalk lost. The Ohio Valley followed.]]></description>
