Most of them were unemployed weavers and tradesmen from the southwest of Scotland, men whose churches had been taken from them and whose ministers had been driven out. They had set out to walk to Edinburgh and present a petition. They ended the day buried in the cold ground of the Pentland Hills, or chained on ships bound for Barbados, or waiting in Edinburgh cells for the executioner. This is the story of one short afternoon and the long, hard years that followed it.]]></description>
