The battle itself lasted a day; the reckoning lasted the better part of a year. In 1068, on the banks of the Alta River near Pereiaslav, the combined armies of three ruling princes of Kievan Rus were routed by a horde of Cuman horsemen from the steppe and fled home in disarray. What made the Alta River famous was not the fighting but what came after: the people of Kyiv, denied weapons by their frightened rulers, rose in revolt, threw down their grand prince, and briefly set a prisoner on his throne. This muddy stream witnessed both a military disaster and a rare moment when the common voice of a medieval city changed who ruled it.
