Battle of the Kerch Peninsula: Introduction

Photo credit Jrissman, CC BY 3.0. On the night after Christmas in 1941, Soviet soldiers crowded into fishing trawlers on the Taman Peninsula and pushed out into a freezing winter sea. They had no proper landing craft, so they made do with whaleboats and whatever floated. Many drowned before they reached the shore; others staggered onto the beaches near Kerch already half-dead from hypothermia. This was the opening of the Battle of the Kerch Peninsula, a five-month struggle at the eastern edge of Crimea meant to relieve the besieged fortress-city of Sevastopol. It would become one of the great Soviet catastrophes of the war, a place where more than a third of a million men were lost on the flat, exposed ground where they had nowhere to hide.
