The name means Yellow Waters, and along this shallow river in south-central Ukraine, on a spring day in 1648, a war that would redraw Eastern Europe began with an ambush. Here Bohdan Khmelnytsky's Cossacks, joined by the horsemen of the Crimean Khanate, closed a ring around a Polish column and would not let it go. For eighteen days the encircled soldiers held on, hoping for a rescue that never came. The battle that unfolded on this ground was the opening blow of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, and almost nothing that followed in the region would look the same again.
