In 1859, American and British forces were squaring off on San Juan Island over the shooting of a pig, and the colonial governor wanted Royal Marines put ashore. Rear Admiral Robert Lambert Baynes, commanding the Pacific Station from 1857 to 1860, refused. He would not, he said, involve two great nations in a war over a squabble about a pig. The pig remained the conflict's only casualty, and the narrow sheltered channel north of the argument still carries Baynes's name.
