Bebedouro: Introduction

The town is named after a drink of water. In the 19th century, riders moving cattle across this corner of northern São Paulo stopped at a stream to let the animals drink, and the place became known as the bebedouro — the watering place. The name outlasted the cattle. It outlasted the coffee boom that actually built the town after its founding on 3 May 1884, and it is still in use now that the coffee trees are gone and the horizon in every direction is ranked with orange groves. Roughly 77,555 people live here, 573 metres up and about 390 kilometres from the state capital.
