That was the entire capacity for moving people, motorbikes, trucks and freight across the Cả River between two provinces whose main arteries both ran straight at the water. Everything on Vietnam's north-south highway had to stop at Bến Thủy and wait its turn, or take the pontoon bridge when one was in place. The queues at the landing were part of the region's texture — hours lost as routine, a bottleneck so old that nobody under sixty had known the crossing any other way. Ending it took four years, five hundred workers and a dam built inside the river.]]></description>
