Bila Tserkva means White Church, and the name is thought to honor a white-walled cathedral that once stood in the medieval town of Yuriiv, founded here in 1032 and named by Yaroslav the Wise after his own Christian name, Yuri. The cathedral is gone, but the name endured through a thousand years of Cossacks and kings, empires and armies. To trace the story of this city on the Ros River, eighty kilometers south of Kyiv, is to follow a single place through nearly the whole sweep of Ukrainian history, and to meet the astonishing cast of people it sent into the world.
