Photo credit Telesbingope, CC BY-SA 4.0. Radio quiet has become a resource, and most of the planet has already spent it. Mobile networks, television transmitters, satellite downlinks and the leaky electronics of ordinary life have filled the sky with human noise at exactly the frequencies cosmologists need. So when an international collaboration led by the University of São Paulo went looking for somewhere to put a telescope, it measured interference at candidate sites in Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo and Goiás before settling on a ridge called Serra do Urubu, outside the small town of Aguiar in the sertão of Paraíba.
