Along the low, watery edge of the northern Black Sea coast, where the land frays into bays, islands, and sandbars across the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve gathers birds by the multitude. More than 300 bird species have been recorded within its bounds, part of a living inventory that tallies roughly 3,500 species in all. This is not scenery in the postcard sense; it is one of the most biologically crowded stretches of coast in Ukraine, a shallow, sun-struck mosaic of wetland where the Gulf of Tendra and Yahorlyk Bay blur the line between sea and shore.
