Two weeks into the Korean War, a memo went up the chain. The Secretary of the Air Force wanted permission to stop waiting. The radar network strung across the United States at that point was a temporary thing, improvised and thin, and on 11 July 1950 the Air Force asked the Secretary of Defense for approval to build the permanent one in a hurry. The answer came back ten days later: yes. Buried in the paperwork that followed was a patch of Whatcom County farmland five and a half miles south of Blaine, Washington - close enough to the Canadian border that the men posted there would spend the next twenty-seven years watching a sky where, if anything ever came, it would come over the pole and down through British Columbia first.
