Four words, said in a thousand studio kitchens, by presenters demonstrating how to build something from a washing-up bottle and sticky-back plastic, and the children of Britain knew exactly what they meant. Blue Peter has been on the air since 16 October 1958, which makes it the longest-running children's television programme in the world. Generations of British children have grown up with its hornpipe theme tune, its ship-shaped badge, its rotating cast of dogs and tortoises and presenters, and the slightly chaotic sense that anything could happen on live television - because, for sixty-six years, it usually did.]]></description>
