Photo credit Jerbialdo, CC BY-SA 4.0. Birders fly here from Europe and North America to look at a bird about seventeen centimetres long, slate grey, with a red eye. The slender antbird — gravatazeiro to the people who live alongside it — is endemic to a strip of eastern Bahia and to one vegetation type in particular, a scrambling, thorny, liana-choked woodland that Brazilians call mata de cipó. It is not caatinga and it is not rainforest. It is the seam where the two press against each other, and since 11 June 2010, 12,065 hectares of that seam have been Boa Nova National Park.
