Brejo means marsh, wetland, boggy ground — a strange thing to call a town in the interior of Pernambuco, where the standard vegetation is thorn scrub adapted to going months without rain. But the name is exact. Brejo da Madre de Deus sits at about 636 metres, high enough on the eastern flank of the Borborema Plateau to intercept moisture the surrounding lowlands never see, and behind the town the ridges of the Serra do Ponto climb toward 1,200 metres. Where the air is forced up, it cools; where it cools, it rains. The result is a wet island in a dry sea.
