The political center is barely a village, while the real action happens along the rim, where the Cape Fear River pours into the Atlantic and barrier islands curl southward into Long Bay. Between 2020 and 2023 this was the fastest-growing county in North Carolina, with the highest median age in the state. Retirees keep arriving, beach communities keep expanding, and the place is somehow still finding room.
