Bull Rock Lighthouse: Introduction

There is a hole through Bull Rock. It runs all the way through the islet, from sea on one side to sea on the other, and in the old Irish mythology this was Tech Duinn - the House of Donn, god of the dead - where the souls of the deceased gathered before passing on. The hole was called the Entrance of the Underworld. On top of this same rock, beginning in 1888, miners with hand tools cut 300 steps into the stone and built a lighthouse keepers could climb to and from. The contrast is more or less the whole story: a place mythology gave to the dead, and engineering pressed into the service of saving sailors.
