Then it quits. At a low, wind-scoured sand point in Rio Grande do Norte the shoreline turns a hard corner and strikes west toward the Amazon, and Brazilians have a name for the pivot — Esquina do Brasil, the Corner of Brazil. Standing in the elbow of that turn is a concrete tower sixty-two metres tall, banded black and white. Calcanhar Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the country, and it is here because the corner is dangerous.
